Lesson Plans - Introduction

This curriculum development project was funded by The Russell Family Foundation. Five teachers attended a ten-day workshop in July 2006 to learn about estuary science. They then created lessons to teach estuary science to their students.

These lessons provide students in upper elementary with a variety of learning experiences to improve science skills described in the Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALRs) for Science and relevant Grade Level Expectations (GLEs). These science education reform tools rely heavily on the "systems approach" and these lessons explore estuary systems.

The Lessons

An estuary can be a valuable food source for people and other organisms

Applying Scientific Methods to Solve a Pollution Problem

Investigation of the relationship between nutrients and dissolved oxygen using aquarium models

Density and temperature changes in estuary water

Who's Right For This Job?

Tide Zones
