No Name Slough is the name of a small creek that drains out to Padilla Bay at the Padilla Demonstration Farm. It's called a slough because the lower reaches are in land so low and flat that itıs effected by the tide. This land was diked and drained over a hundred years ago and the water of No Name passes through a tide gate under the Padilla Bay Shore Trail.
The Tide Gate at the No-Name Slough
The upper reaches of the No Name Slough watershed are on Bay View Ridge. As you may know a lot of growth is projected for Bay View Ridge. Now is the best time to think ahead about what we can do to improve the conditions for humans, fish, and wildlife.
The No Name Slough Watershed Study will develop options to address the issues of farm flooding, polluted waters, and fish and wildlife restoration opportunities. Decisions will utilize on-going data being collected on water quantity, quality, water flow, and habitat within the watershed. It is a unique, joint staff effort of the Skagit Conservation District and the Padilla Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. Both are non-regulatory agencies interested in resource conservation and community solutions to the challenges caused by growth.
Anyone who lives, works, or owns property in the local watershed can participate. Please contact the Reserve to get involved. There will be meetings where you can tell us your ideas. Talk to neighbors and share your vision. You can take advantage of a number of workshops, classes, and volunteer opportunities related to clean water.
