Evaluation

We have created and tested two different evaluation tools that teachers can use to measure the effectiveness of the estuary studies they provide to their students: a pre-test, post-test tool and a student letter tool.

1. The Pre-test, Post-test tool involves students taking a pre-test questionnaire before they come to Padilla Bay and before they do any estuary related activities or curriculum in class. The second, post-trip questionnaire has all the same questions, plus one asking them what they think is the most important thing they learned about estuaries. This is to be completed after the Padilla Bay field trip and after all wrap up activities are completed.

2. Student Letters involve students writting about what they learned in the form of a thank you letter to Padilla Bay. These are sent to Padilla Bay with a completed Teacher Survey. Teachers can edit, add or delete questions to make them more appropriate for their class.

Curriculum

Estuaries 101 is a curriculum developed by the National Estuarine Reserve System that includes student activities, professional development and training in the use of data from the System Wide Monitoring Program (SWMP).

On-line lesson plans have been developed by teachers to use estuary education to build skills outlined in the Washington State Learning Standards.

Our tried and true Curriculum

A series of texts is also available at three grade levels: K-3 (Level I), 4-8 (Level II), and high school (Level III). They are intended to compliment a visit to Padilla Bay, but are also appropriate for students studying estuaries anywhere in Washington State. All three use Padilla Bay as the example with a focus on eelgrass and mud flat habitats.

These three texts can be purchased at the Reserve or if you contact the Reserve they can be mailed and billed to you. Prices vary with production costs.

You can also download the Padilla Bay Curriculum right from this site and print them for free! These documents are available in Portable Document Format (PDF).
