The International Brant Monitoring Project
Project Partners

Rod Hug is a birdwatcher who watches brant in three bays in Northern California: Bodega Bay, Lemanture Estero, and Tomales Bay.

"During the 1950s I used to hunt Brant in the three bays in that area.   But I no longer carry a shotgun, just a birding scope and note book.   In those days the Brant numbers were far greater than they are now in this area.   For example, I used to see about 3000 Brant in Lemanture Estero at what is now the Point Reyes National Seashore, but I now count between 20 and 200 or so Brant in the estero.    Loons and other sea birds were also far more common in those days.

After 1960 I became busy with raising a family and had little time to watch Brant.   Now that I have retired from my job as a nuclear engineer I watch the Brant that I fell in love with as a teen-age kid. "
