1 English The first departure of brant was observed at Izembek Lagoon on Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. A flock of 150 brant was observed flying south over Cold Bay. It is believed that the majority of the brant population is still at Izembek Lagoon. 3 English An aerial survey was conducted of Izembek Lagoon on October 25. It was estimated that there were 129,967 brant in the lagoon. The largest flocks, consisting of 10,000 to 20,000 brant, were mostly concentrated in the central portion of the lagoon where the most extensive eelgrass beds are located. The brant are expected to depart on the next set of strong northwesterly winds. Northwest winds are NOT predicted to occur within the next several days, so no significant numbers of brant are expected in head south in the near future.

4 English Oct 28th 2004. at 08:30 in Boundary Bay near Delta B.C. Canada. Three brant geese were seen flying around the Bay. They landed well out well out in the bay amongst thousands of waterfowl. At 08:50 another 3 Brant flew in, circled, then landed close to shore. They soon came up on the beach and I could see that none of them had a leg band. At 09:30 a Bald Eagle arrived and scared all the waterfowl from the area.

5 English A brant departure occurred on the evening of October 29 at Izembek Lagoon. Some brant were showing signs of migratory restlessness, with flocks flying high over the lagoon and flying around in circles, shortly before sunset. After sunset at 7:15 p.m., at least 15 flocks were observed or heard flying south or southeast over Cold Bay (both the town and the bay). Of the flocks that were visible, one was about 1000 birds but most were 100-300 birds. Half of the flocks were seen or heard shortly after sundown, while the remainder were heard between 7:45 and 9:00 p.m. It was a mostly clear night with light winds initially from the northwest, switching to the southeast by 9:00 p.m. The nearly full moon was rising and providing lots of light. Since many of the brant were not exhibiting migratory restlessness at sunset and because the weather patterns were not very favorable for a long distance migration, tonight's departure is not expected to be a significant movement of birds. 10 English An aerial survey of Izembek Lagoon was conducted on October 30 to estimate the number of brant remaining in Izembek Lagoon. This survey was conducted in response to the brant departures observed on the evening of October 29. A total of 106,652 brant were estimated to be in the lagoon, 23,315 fewer brant than were observed on the October 25th aerial survey. It appears that 10-20% of the brant population may have departed and headed south.

Strong north and northwest winds on October 31 may push more of the brant out of here. Stay tuned for more updates. 13 English Izembek Lagoon has been under the influence of a strong storm for the last three days. Winds have been blowing in excess of 20 mph the entire time, with lots of mixed rain, sleet, snow, and fog. The last two days, winds have gusted to more than 50 mph and that is supposed to continue through today.

A lot of people have asked if the brant have left. We are unable to fly an aerial survey given the weather conditions. The wind has been too strong to view the lagoon through a spotting scope, and the white caps make it almost impossible to see anything on the water. It has been impossible to hear any brant flocks flying overhead because the wind is too noisy. Therefore, we cannot tell you if the brant have left Izembek or not.

Although winds have tended to be southwest or west, we have had some northwest winds since Saturday. The winds are from the west this morning but the forecast for northwest winds today and tonight. Keep your eyes open to see if any brant show up down south. Español Hasta trés días antes una tormenta fuerte he estado en la Laguna de Izembek. Vientos habían soplando de velocidades de más que 32 km/hr (20 millas cada hora) con una mezcla de llueve, aguanieve, nieve y niebla. 14 English Weather was stormy today with gusty winds, frequent snow/hail showers, and very poor visibility. During a break in the weather at 11:30 a.m., a trip was made to Grant Point in Izembek Lagoon. A flock of about 3000 brant was observed milling around above the lagoon. Next, the flock flew west, then southwest, before turning back towards the lagoon. They obviously wanted to leave the area, but perhaps the winds weren't quite right. Approximately 6,000 birds, which could have included Canada geese and Steller's eiders as well as brant, remained on the water of the lagoon.

Another break in the weather occurred during the evening and a trip was made to the end of the Outer Marker road. At 5:40 p.m., a flock of about 700 brant was observed flying northwest (into the wind) over the lagoon before they disappeared. A flock of about 1,000 brant was observed shortly thereafter. They were initially flying northwest but abruptly switched directions and headed southwest. Very few brant were observed on the lagoon, although there were lots of whitecaps to make viewing conditions poor. It is possible, however, that a major departure occurred today. If weather conditions permit and there aren't too many snow showers, we will try to fly an aerial survey within the next day or two to confirm departure. 16 English Today the first Gray Bellied Brant (it was an adult) was seen at Boundary Bay Regional Park Tsawwassen, Delta B.C. Canada. Wind SE 7 Knots. Tide about 9 Foot and rising fast. The sky was overcast.
The following leg bands were seen:
Aqua, ?HL
White /VL
White right leg ?R8 and possible mate ?Y4
I have not checked the records but I think /VL is a regular winter resident in Boundary Bay and maybe Aqua ?HL because I remember seeing several Aqua Bands with HL.

30 English The first brant have arrived in Padilla Bay!

Alex Alexander and I (Maya Groner), went to search for the brant yesterday at 1 pm. The weather was cool and clear, with very little wind. We did not see any brant at Samish Island or on Alice's Bay and we were not very optimistic that we would. We did see several loons, mergansers, longtails and grebes, however.

We arrived at Swinomish Channel around 3 and immediately saw large flocks of pintails and mallards. Farther out, a flock of about 70 brants were clustered around a narrow spit, preening and gristing. They were not feeding, as the tide was quite high. The brant were too far away to determine if juveniles were present, but we could distinguish both black brant and grey-bellies in the flock. Compared to observations over the past several years, the brant have arrived earlier. In 2003 and 2004, brant were not observed in Padilla Bay until late November. 31 English The snow showers finally tapered off today and we were able to conduct an aerial survey of Izembek and Kinzarof Lagoons during the afternoon. This is our first aerial survey since Saturday. Since that time, we have had high winds (sometimes gusts of more than 60 mph), heavy snow showers, hail, sleet, and rain. Visibility was frequently less than 1/2 mile. The weather conditions have made assessing the exact time of departure for the brant difficult.

Anyway, we estimated that there were about 78,000 brant remaining in the lagoon. This is considerably less than we saw on Saturday. It looks like at least 40% of the brant have headed south. I was actually surprised that more had not left. One of the hunters told me that the brant looked very uncomfortable being pelted by pea-size hail!

Most of the Canada geese have departed. Less than 2000 were in the lagoon today. During peak staging in mid-October, there is usually about 40,000 Canada geese. Hopefully, the next northwest wind will blow the rest of the brant out of here too. 33 English An aerial survey was conducted of Izembek and Kinzarof Lagoons on Tuesday, Nov 9. This was a practice survey for a first time observer. The pilot estimated that there were 25-50% fewer brant present than had been observed on Friday, Nov 5. The observer estimated that there was approximately 23,500 brant in the lagoon, which falls within the range of the pilot's estimate. During the survey, a flock of 80 brant was observed spiralling up to higher altitudes (400-500 ft) over Kinzarof Lagoon. This behavior is consistent with that of flocks preparing to depart, even though the wind was from the south-southeast. Although we have not had strong weather patterns that are favorable for brant departure, it is clear that the majority of the brant have left Izembek Lagoon and only about 15-30% of the population remains. I suspect the repeated snow showers and the beginning of ice formation around the edges of the lagoon is triggering departures despite the lack of a good northwesterly wind.

36 English Boundary Bay Regional Park Tsawwassen Delta , B.C. Canada. Observations are from the Pump House. The weather is overcast  with winds coming from the East-northeast at  6 Knots, The tide at seven feet and rising. I counted a total of 268 brant of which 47 were juveniles. The geese were disturbed several times by thes passing of larger birds overhead. These birds include a northern harrier, a blue heron and a bald eagle. 39 English 11-11-04    10:12  Boundary Bay, near the Eastern Pt. of the Park.  The wind  is from the North-northwest at 4 Knots   The cloud cover is low and there are fog patches. The tide is 9 feet and rising. A dog running after waterfowl and geese, chased the brant off the Beach, just arround the corner from my position. It chased the birds out onto the water pursuing them into the shallows. Aviónes de la era del segundo guerra mundial hicieron un vuelo bajo y los motos altos se asutaban las brantas desde la playa a la bahía. Cincuenta o más brantas salieron de la bahía por el suroeste.   

40 English 11-12-04  One of my BEST Winter days of observing brant in Boundary Bay. The wind was light, and the sea was calm. It was overcast with some breaks in the clouds. There was construction noise again -nail gunning and hammering. 491  Brant observed for bands JUST off the dike near the Park, very close to the trails and passing people. I observed one bird with a metal band and one badly crippled bird. What was neat is that there was NO Dist. even though this was a holiday weekend People respected the birds and stayed away Birds were sleeping on the beach. Lo interesante es que las brantas no se asustaban aunque era un día de fiesta. La gente las respetaban y se alejaban de las brantas. Las brantas pudieron dormir en la playa. No mudaban mucho y por eso fue difícil a ver grupos de familias. Ví un solo branta con un vientre grís. Que día bueno.

42 English I saw a PAIR of  Gray Bellied Brant near the beach. There could have been more but a bald eagle scared much of the flock away . 44 English I counted 285 brant at Drakes Estero, CA on November 20, 2004. It appears these brant were familiar with the estero, so they may not be migrants. As the tide receded and the eel grass beds became exposed, the brant moved from the mouth of the estero to the eel grass beds in the inner parts of the estero. If all these brant stay, it would represent more than a 100 percent increase in the number of brant wintering at Drakes Estero over recent years. Drakes Estero is in the heart of the Point Reyes National Seashore. It has many sand bars, channels, clean ocean water, and abundant eel grass beds. Except for an occasional kayak, the estero has no human sources of disturbance. During the 1950s, I spent a lot of time at Drakes Estero, and in those years up to 3,500 brant wintered there.

Santa Rosa, CA Español En el 20 de Noviembre, 2004 conté 285 brantas en Drakes Estero, CA. Parece que las brantas estaban comodas en el estero; quizas no estaben migrantes. Mientrás la maréa se bajaba y el pasto marina estaba expuesto, las brantas se mudaban desde la boca del estero hasta las camas de pasto en el medio del Estero.Si las brantas se queden, sería un aumento de más de 100 por ciento en el numero de brantas quedando en Drakes Estero en los años recientemente. Drakes Estero está en el corazón de Point Reyes National Seashore (La Costa Nacional de Punta Reyes). Tiene muchos barras de arena, canales, agua limpia del mar y pasto marina. We went to Guerrero Negro lagoon, the day was pretty and we stay there about one and a half hour. We observed 2067 BRANT. We talk about the Brant and the children participate a lot. We also saw other kind of birds, like White and Brown Pelicans, Egrets and Blue Heron, Sandpipers, Sea Gulls, Long Billed Curlew.

Observamos un gran número de Brantas en la parte central de la bahía, solo que estaban muy lejos y no pudimos contarlas exáctamente. Concluimos que eran más de 10,000. También observamos un grupo de brantas volando. (alrededor de 100 brantas).

Comentarios: Salimos a las 4:00 p.m. Llegamos a la pilita, había pocas brantas, el viento era leve, el cielo estaba un poco nublado, la marea estaba subiendo. De camino a la base vimos 16 brantas y unas cuantas gaviotas. Después paramos antes de llegar a Campo Pachico y atravesamos el camino para llegar a la orilla de la playa y había muchas espinas. Observamos un promedio de 110 brantas adultas y una parvada de sarapicos. De regreso al carro, el Juan G. se resbaló y se espinó, y venía quejándose todo el camino mientras yo (Adilene) venía quitándome las espinas que se me habían pegado en el pantalón. Antes de llegar a la cuevita (Campo Pachico) había varias parvadas de brantas, un promedio de 150 brantas adultas. A las 4:30 p.m. nos paramos a ver los restos de una tortuga que al parecer tenía unos dos meses de muerta. La playa estaba limpia a comparación de los otros lugares visitados. Vimos un gavilán playero y dos alcatraces muertos. También vimos otras dos tortugas muertas y al parecer eran muy jóvenes.
* Nota: este reporte fue enviado por fax desde San Ignacio, y el mensaje llegó incompleto. Al parecer los muchachos observaron más brantas de las que menciono aquí. Además, en la hoja que envían no aparece la fecha de la salida, pero debe ser entre noviembre y diciembre de 2004.
ENGLISH:
We left at 4 pm. The wind was light, the sky was a little cloudy and the tide was rising. On the walk from the road to the study sight we saw 16 brant and a number of gulls. Before we arrived at Camp Pachico we backtracked to see the beach around the corner. There were a lot spines. We saw a raft of 110 adult brant and a flock of curlew. When we returned to the car Juan G. slipped and got pricked with a spine. He returned complaining the whole walk back while I (Adilene) was picking out the spines that they had poked in my pants. Before arriving at the cave (camp Pachico) there were various rafts of brant, approximately 150 adults. At 4:30 p.m. we stopped to see the remains of a sea turtle that appeared to have been dead for about two months. The beach was clean compared to the other places we visited. We saw a kestrel on the beach and two dead alcatrez. We also saw two more dead turtles that appearred very young. Note: This report was faxed from San Ignacio and the message arrived incomplete. It appeared that the kids observed more brant than they mentioned here. The sheet the mailed did no have a date, but it should be between November and December 2004.

75 English 55 brant were counted in the inner bay and 598 in the outer bay. This is unusual. More often the larger number is in the inner bay where the eelgrass beds are. The outer bay contains no eelgrass, probably due to many years of intensive clamming.

There was considerable hunting disturbance today. Three goose hunters were stationed between the outer and inner bays. The entire outer bay group of brant got up and flew out to sea and stayed when the guns started going off.
Español Conté 55 brantas en la interior de la bahía y 598 en la exterior de la bahía. Es algo raro. Es más común tener más brantas en la interior donde están las camas de pasto marino. El exterior de la bahía no tiene pasto marina, probablamente a resuelto de muchos años con mucho gente pescando almejas. Hoy habían muchas molestías de cazadores. Trés cazadores de gansos habían trabajando en medio de la bahía exterior y la bahía interior. Cuando las escopetas disparon todas las brantas en la bahía exterior volaban al mar y se quedaban allá.

Comentarios: Nos tocó al equipo 2 salir a monitorear la Branta Negra. Salimos como a las 4:00 pm. Y nos subimos al carro del Profesor Saúl y partimos. Llegamos a La Freidera, el viento soplaba del norte y hacía mucho sol (fuertemente). En ese lugar pudimos observar aproximadamente 68 brantas, de las cuales no se pudo distinguir cuáles de ellas eran juveniles o adultas, pues se encontraban retiradas de la orilla y había oleaje por le viento. En el mismo trayecto pudimos observar 48 pelícanos, 18 gaviotas, sarapicos y 2 águilas pescadoras, toda esa variedad de aves era debido a que se encontraba una panga en la orilla, donde se encontraban unos señores matando callo de hacha y por eso había tanto alboroto. Ya de regreso al carro nos arrebató un perro. “VAYA SUSTO QUE NOS LLEVAMOS”. Al final todos regresamos felices y contentos.

Comments: Today, the team number 2 went to monitor the Black Brant. We started at 4:00 pm., we all get into the car of Teacher Saúl and started our trip. We arrive to La Freidera Camp. The wind was coming from the North and the sun was very strong. In this place we observe about 68 Brant, but we couldn’t distinguish between juvenile and adults, because they were very far from the shore, and because of the strong wind. In the area we observed about 48 Pelicans, 18 Sea Gulls, Long-billed Curlews and 2 Ospreys. Al that diversity of birds were there because there was a boat where a group of fishermen was killing a kind of clams. When we get back a dog attacked us. IT GAVE US A REAL FRIGHT! At the end we finished our trip very happy.

80 English On December 14, 2004 I counted 541 Brant at Drakes Estero. Count was done at 8AM from Bull Point. The sun was up, no clouds, and no wind. The water surface was glassy. Brant were taking eelgrass from the water surface on a rising tide.

Counts taken so far this year indicate declines in Tomales Bay and Bodega Bay since 2001, but a sharp rise in Drakes Estero.

Tomales Bay:
year 2001 the high count was 2664 and the low count was 783
Year 2002 the high count was 3089 and the low count was 1859
Year 2003 the count was 1257
This year so far the high count was 653 (598 of these exited the bay in response to gun discharge noise on Dec 4) and the low count was 302

Bodega Bay:
year 2001 the count was 600
Year 2002 the count was 760
Year 2003 the high count was 727 and the low count was 407
This year so far the high count was 316

Drakes Estero:
year 2001 the count was 48
Year 2002 the high count was 243 and the low count was 52
Year 2003 the high count was 223 and the low count was 47. Several counts were close to 100
This year so far the high count was 541 (todays count). 285 were counted on 11/20 and 351 were counted on 11/30.

Español En el 14 de Deciembre, 2004, conté 541 brantas en Drakes Estero. Lo hizo a las 8 AM desde 'Bull Point.' El sol ya estaba arriba y no habían nubes ni viento. El superfície del agua fue como vidrio. Las brantas habían tomando pasto marino desde el superfície del agua mientras la maréa crecía. La informacíon sobre brantas este año indica que en este año hay menos brantas en la bahía de Tomales y la bahía de Bodega. Hay un aumento dramatíca en el número de brantas en Drakes Estero. Bahía de Tomales 2001- un máximo de 2664 brantas y un mínimo de 783 2002- un maxímo de 3089 y un mínimo de 1859 2003- 1,257 brantas 2004 Este año el máximo 653 (598 de cual se fueron en respuesta a los disparos de armas el 4 de Deciembre). El mínimo fue 302. Bahía de Bodega 2001- 600 brantas 2002- 76 brantas 2003 el máxímo fue 727 brantas y el mínimo fue 407. 2004- Hasta ahora el máximo fue 316.

Comentarios:Salimos a las 4:00 pm. de la escuela y llegamos a Campo Pachico y no miramos ninguna branta, la marea estaba demasiado baja, cuya información causó decepción a los integrantes de este equipo y no hacía nada de viento. Nos fuimos a la laguna y a lo lejos se veía una parvada, pero no se distinguía si eran gaviota o patos, o quizá Brantas, eran aproximadamente unas 50 brantas, o lo que fueran. De ahí, como no funcionó nuestra ida, nos fuimos rumbo al inicio del Campo Pachico y nos bajamos y el Profesor Saúl regañó a la Estrella porque se bajó con la bolsa de las Sabritas y puro comer se la llevaba. Donde llegamos estaba alto, y se podían bajar para abajo, y el Profr. y el Carlos se quedaron arriba para observar las brantas. La Estrella, el Roberto, la Abigaíl y la Isabel se bajaron a unas rocas que ahí se encontraban y nos pusimos a observar las brantas y contamos aproximadamente de 500 a 600 en promedio. Después de un rato de estar observando, se levantaron el Profr. y el Carlos de donde estaban sentados y dijo el Profr. Vámonos, y no hicimos caso. Después vino el profe por nosotros y la Estrella y el Roberto se bajaron de las piedras al lodo y el Profesor los regañó porque le iban a ensuciar el carro, y los plebes se asustaron porque les dijo que así no se subirían al carro y ya no nos fuimos, nos quedamos atrás. Después nos subimos al carro y la Abi y la Estrella querían un cuchillo para abrir la piña porque ya se les había acabado el lonche y querían comerse la piña y el profe les dijo que no había, y ya que se callaron las plebes, el profe nos llevó a un panal de abejas y nos paramos cerca de él y lo observamos muy poco, porque ya era hora de regresar. Por fin decidimos regresar a la escuela y el profe nos dijo que echáramos los binoculares a la caja y el Rober los echó. Llegamos a la escuela y todos nos fuimos a nuestras casas, terminando así nuestra misión.

Comments: We started our trip at 4:00 pm. at the school, and first we arrive to Campo Pachico and we didn’t saw any Brant. The tide was too low and some of us got frustrated. There was no wind. We went to the lagoon and far away we saw a group of birds, but we didn’t distinguish if they were Sea Gulls, Ducks or maybe Brant. They were about 50 Brant, or whatever. Then, as this wasn’t working, we went almost out of Campo Pachico. We get off the car and Teacher Saúl tell off Estrella, because she spend all the time eating potato ships.
The teacher and Carlos stay up the hill to watch Brant, and Estrella, Roberto, Abigaíl y Isabel went down the hill and stay on the rocks. We counted between 500 and 600 Brant. After a while the teacher called us, but we didn’t obey. Estrella and Roberto stepped on the mud, so the teacher tell off them, because they were going to get that mud into the car.
Finally we get into the car and Abi and Estrella were asking for a knife, because they wanted to cut a pineapple (they already had eat their lunch). The teacher says there wasn’t any knife. At least, the teacher took us to a bee’s honeycomb. We stand very close to it, and stay there just a little, because we must get back to school. When we get back the teacher ask us to keep the binocular (Robert did it). We went to our homes and finish our mission.


82 English Count was done at 7:30 AM from Toms Point on low tide. Weather was good, no wind, and good visibility. A River Otter was making breakfast of an Egret. The oyster boat disturbed about 75 brant, which re-landed on the water in about 2 minutes. Not much of a disturbance. The oyster boat appeared to try going around the brant, rather than disturb them.

Español Conté las brantas a 7:30 AM desde 'Toms Point' cuando la mareá estaba bajo. El tiempo fue bueno, sin viento y con buena visibilidad. Una nutria del rió desayunaba en una garceta. El bote de ostrias se molestó aproximadamente 75 brantas, cuales se posaron en el agua dos minutos después. No era un influencia grande. Parecía que el bote trató a acercarles, en vez de molestarle.

83 English On Dec 29, 2004 I counted 515 Brant in Bodega Bay. Visibility was better than usual. A 10-knot North West wind was blowing, and the temperature was a comfortable 56 degrees. This count is an increase over the 316 counted on Dec 12, 2004, but is less than the 1017 and 800 counted in Dec 2002 and 2003 respectively. A large quantity of fresh eelgrass was thrown up on the beach by the recent storm. The Brant were busy taking eelgrass on high tide. I look forward to seeing brant sightings by the youngsters.

Español En Dec 29, 2004 conté 515 brantas en la bahía de Bodega. La visibilidad era mejor que lo normal. Un viento del noroeste soplaba a 10 nudos y la temperatura era comoda a 56 grados Fahrenheit. Este número de brantas es un aumento sobre los 316 contados en Dec 12, 2004. El número de hoy es menos que los 1017 y los 800 contados en Dec 2002 y 2003. Una grande cantidad de pasto marina fue puesta en la playa por la tormenta reciente. Las brantas comieron pasto marina durante la marea creciente. Espero que los jóvenes divulguen los observaciónes de brantas pronto.

86 English Jan. 26, 2005. At Boundary Bay, Delta, B.C.

In a flock of about 80 brant I was able to check 66 of them for bands. Some of them were gray bellies. One had a BLUE band on the right leg: 5KE. Then I saw the band on the bird that I think is it’s mate: Yellow, right leg ZLK.

This pair was seen earlier this year with what I believed was a juvenile and I am now convinced that this pair does have a juvenile with them. This is of interest because these birds are very old. I believe my records show ZLK was seen here in January 1995 and 5KE in 1998. I could be wrong. They may have been banded MUCH earlier. Could this older pair have adopted a baby from a younger pair?

Though my count may be unreliable, I think 23 of 204 birds (11%) were juvenile.

Later two more bands were observed:

All were disturbed by a Bald Eagle. This was one of the longest periods for the birds to have been undisturbed in SOME time!! And the first time in weeks that any bands have been read! Of interest is that ALL 4 Bands are LONG time winter resident birds.

Algunas estaban brantas vientre-grís. Una tenía una cinta azul en la pierna derecha: 5KE. Después ví la cinta del ave que pienso es su compañera: era amarillo, alrededor de la pierna derecha: ZLK. He visto la pareja otra vez este año con una branta que parecía juveníl. Ahora estoy seguro que la pareja tiene un juveníl con ellos. Es algo interesante porque esta pareja es muy vieja. Mis documentos tienen nota de una observación de ZLK en enero de 1995 y una observación de 5KE en 1998. Puedo ser incorrecto. Las bandas pudiera ser atado mucho más temprano. ¿Sea posible que la pareja tiene un juveníl que adoptaron de una pareja más joven? Aunque mis observaciones puede ser inconstante, pienso que 23 de los 204 aves (11%) esten juveníles. Más tarde ví dos cintas más: azul, pierna izquierda, 28N y blanca, pierna derecha, LAR. Una aguila calva les molestó a todas las brantas. Hoy tenía un tiempo bien largo sin molestías. Era la primera vez en muchas semanas que podía leer las cintas en las piernas de las brantas. De interés es que las cuatro cintas que leí son de brantas que han pasado el invierno aquí por mucho tiempo.

90 This is a report from Alex, Education Coordinator at Padilla Bay Reserve, but not Allen Elementary. Last Saturday I was kayaking in Padilla Bay and saw about 75 brant geese. I came upon the first group in the morning when the water was glassy calm and a group of about 25 brant were not at all afraid. We paddled within about 100 feet of the birds! Later the wind came up and when we approached a group of about 50 brant, we didn't see them between the white caps until they flew. I felt bad about scaring them and making them fly. Later, a group about the same size flew by and circled around us.

91 After several unfruitful attempts to see brant in Padilla and Samish Bays, I had a rewarding brant watching day. I observed 20 brant floating in the water on the west side of the Swinomish channel where it opens up into Padilla Bay. They were no more than 40 feet from shore which was heavily populated by pintails, mallards, gulls and great blue herons. I could not distinguish if there were gray-bellies or juveniles in the group. The weather was sunny and crisp. Patches of low-lying fog lowered our visibility at other sites around Padilla and Samish bay.

94 Español: Creo que esta salida fue la vez que mejor tiempo nos ha tocado para observar brantas, el agua de la bahía estaba muy calmada, tanto que parecía un espejo, así que nos subimos a un morro de arena y pudimos hacer un conteo más acertado, aún cuando se encontraban retiradas de la orilla.
English: I think this has been the field trip with the best weather of all. The water was glassy. We went up to a hillock and count more accuratelly, even when the brant were so far from the shore.

95 Español: Esta vez fuimos al otro lado de la bahía que acostumbrábamos ir. Estuvimos en El Pedregal y pudimos observar a un gran grupo de brantas todavía, pero igual que las veces anteriores estaban bastante retiradas. Aún así intentamos hacer un conteo y llegamos a la conclusión de que eran unas 3,000 las que se encontraban más cercad. Utilizamos los binoculares y el telescopio para realizar un conteo más acertado, pero estaba haciendo un poco de viento y nos movía el telescopio. Había un pequeño grupo de 35 brantas en la orilla.
Esperamos poder realizar otra salida antes de que se empiecen a marchar.
English: This time we go to the other side of the bay. We go to El Pedregal and saw a big group of brant, but just as other times they were very far from the shore. Anyway we count them and they were about 3,000. We use binoculars and the telescope to make a more accurately counting. The day was windy and the telescope was unstable. There was a little group of 35 brant on the shore.

97 Last Saturday I attended the Washington brant Festival, "Wings Over Water" in Blaine WA. I had a booth there to let people know about our Brant Monitoring Project. People were very impressed with the contents of the Care Package. They were especially impressed with the art from Mexico. I met some very interesting people. I'm beginning to realize that it's common for people to fall in love with brant if they spend any time looking at them. What is it about brant geese that is so endearing? During the festival and went to Birch Bay State Park and saw 261 brant geese coming up on the beach only about 60 feet away. It was amazing to me because at Padilla Bay brant are hard to see because they are always so far away and if you get within a quarter mile, they fly.

98 Tonight I did a count of brant geese between the Causeways from Tsawwassen Terminal to the Coal Port / Westshore Terminal . The conditions were not the best with a NNW wind at 12 knots, small waves and overcast sky. The tide  was at 11 feet and falling fast . The birds were well spread out but I could have missed  several hundred birds in the waves.  I used a Kowa Scope on 20  to  30 X zoom.

Brant gather in LARGE numbers in a small area along the edge of the dredged ship turning channel. This rip rap wall seems to have some plants that attract brant and other birds in large numbers.   Tonight I had the chance to review the maps of the proposed new development at the Coal Port/ Westshore. And I see that they propose constructing within a short distance of  the western portion of this breakwater! What will be the outcome of this?  It could be that the birds use this haul out as it is one area where they are free from Eagle and human caused disturbence. They seem to have abandoned other areas of shoreline.

Comentarios: salimos de la escuela rumbo a Campo Cortez a las 4:00pm llegamos a la playa a las 4:20 y observamos dos grupos de brantas que nadaban cerca de la orilla, las observamos por un rato con binoculares, y despues platicamos con unos señores que preparaban un campamento para observar las ballenas esta temporada, y nos dijeron que con la marea mas baja se veian muchas brantas, el día estaba un poco nublado y casi no hacia viento.

Then we talked with some people that were preparing a camp for the whale watching season. They told us that with the low tide you can see many more brant. The day was a little cloudy, and there was almost no wind.

Comentarios: En esta ocasion nos fuimos a Campo Pachico llegamos a la playa a las 4:20 nos bajamos del carro y empezamos a contar brantas, primero contamos las que estaban cerca al rato un compañero observo a lo lejos una parvada super grande de brantas nos acercamos para contarlas con ayuda del telescopio y el contador, contamosaproximadamente 2000 brantas en ese lugar aunque discutimos un rato pues unas compañeros decian que eran mas brantas pero lo dejamos en 2000 aprox. porque era muy dificil hacer un conteo mas exacto. La marea estaba baja y el viento era leve y provenia del norte.

Comments: This time we went to Campo Pachico, and arrived to the beach at 4:20 pm. We get off the car and started our counting. First, we counted the brat that were closer. Then, one of us watched a “super-big” flock, so we all get closer and count them using the telescope and the hand counter. We count about 2,000. We discussed for a while, because some of the girls said that there were many more. Finally we decided to let it as 2,000 +/-, because it was very difficult to make a more accurate counting. The tide was low and the wind was very light, coming from Noth.

El viento era un poco fuerte y la marea estaba ni alta ni baja.

Comments: Today some students didn’t come to school. We were only three, and started our field trip on Campo Pachico. When we arrived, there were some people putting a marquee for the tourist camp. The tourist will come to watch the grey whales. We could speak with Domingo, a man that works in the camp. Then we go to count the brant. Including the teacher, we were 4 person. We get very close to the brant and we watch them and count them for a while. One of the students in our team said that a bront has a leg ring, but the rest of us didn’t see it. He said that it looks like an aluminium ring, but he couldn’t read the numbers. We are not sure about this, because he was the only one who saw it.

At the end of the trip we stay for a while talking on the “desaladora” (where they get the salt off the sea water), because there we were protected from the wind. The teacher told us to get into the car and then we get back to school.

Comentarios: El dia amanecio muy bonito, pues habia sol y no hacia viento y asi permanecio todo el dia, nos reunidos todo el equipoi en las escuela a las 4:00. y teniamos todo los materiales para realizr el monitoreo, estabamos muy emocionados nos habian comentado que habian visto un gran numero de brantas cerca delos manglesa si que iniciamos la aventura salimos rumbo al estero, al llegar a la area de la planta ostionera el maestro se bajo y pidio permiso para pasar, dejamos el carro en el estacionamiento y nos dirijimos a la orillap'ara poder observar habia un grupo de brantas de 300 aprox. seguimos caminando y encontarmos un grupo mas grande que el primero de aprox. 460, las cuales no se concluyo el conteo pues cuando estabamos observando paso una panga de pescadores y las espanto de regreso todoa compartimos dulces y nos pusimos a cantar con la maestra y la Karlita.

Comments: The day was very nice, with full sun and almost no wind, and it stay like this all day long. We get our gear togetherin the school at 4:00 pm. We have all our materials to go branting. We were very excited, because they’ve told us that they’ve seen many brant close to the mangrove. So we started our adventure heading to the estuary. When we arrived to the oyster plant area, the teacher get off the car and ask permission to pass by. We leave the car on the parking, and walked to the shore to see a flock. There were about 300 brant. We keep walking and found a bigger flock (about 460), but we didn’t finish our counting, because a boat scared the birds. When we get back we shared some candies and sing with the teacher and Karlita (the teacher’s little daugther).

Comentarios: Salimos de la escuela con 15 minutos de retraso dos de nuestros compañeros que vivien rtetirados habian quedados ponchados en el camino, hasta que llego un señor a auxiliarlos. al llegar a campo Ramon nos bajamos a saludar( se encuentra un campamento para turistas que vienen a observar ballenas ) porque ahi trabajan algunos fdamiliares de nosotros nos brindaron sodas y algunos dulces y nos fuimos con eñ profe y la maestra hasta la orilla donde pudimos observar un maravilloso espectaculo, a lo lejos una ballena hacia un saltos, despues el maestro nos dio algunas instrucciones y nos dividimos para cubrir en su totalidad el area en donde encontraban las brantas de regreso todos platicamos y discitimos sobre la importancia de cuidar las playas y la revision del reporte.

Comments: We leave the school 15 minute later, because two of our classmates had a flat tire and they have to wait until someone else help them. When we arrived to Campo Ramón, we said hello to the people there (there’s a whale watching tourist camp). Some of our relatives work there and they gave us softdrinks and candies. We went to the shore with the teachers (teacher Saul, and his wife, teacher Karla) and there we observed a wonderful thing: at the distance a grey whale was jumping. Then the teacher gave some instructions about how we could cover more area. When we get back, we talked and discussedabout the importance of beach conservancy and about our reports.

106 05-21-05 Saturday  08:25  In the Georgia Straights Off the north-east tip of Gabriola Island there was a flock of Geese VERY likely Brant flying north-west up the Straight. I was not able to tell for sure but by they way they flew, they were probably not cormorants. The flock was  about 120 birds. It's interesting to see birds here so late.
